from the back:

Goodbye Madame Butterfly offers a modern twist on the tradition in Japanese literature to revel in tales of sexual exploits. Kawakami’s non- fiction update on this theme is intimate and revealing, offering strands of hope for women struggling to liberate themselves from joyless, sexless relationships.

Production Details:

  • 224 pages
  • hardcover
  • sewn in bookmark
  • 11 intimate, non fiction portraits of Japanese women (and one man: the sex volunteer)
  • slightly larger than a standard paperback but smaller than your average hardcover — perfectly balanced in weight and easy to throw (gently, of course) into your bag
  • beautiful Japanese papers used for the cover, endpages, tobira, half-titles and body text

Goodbye Madame Butterfly was printed and bound in Tokyo, Japan by Yushin Printing.

The image of the woman on the cover of GMB was taken from a 100+ year old book on Japanese fashion found in the Jimbocho used book district of central Tokyo.
